I have provided notes on these chapters for you to further your reading and hopefully interaction with them. I would encourage you to read 1 Samuel 18 & 19 first and THEN read the notes on them. That way you won’t be too confused…hopefully 🙂
Remember to start out each day in a quiet place and prayer. Remove distractions! That’s literally the hardest thing to do!
Write this stuff in your journal and just use this as a guide in your personal worship 🙂
Day 1: Read 1 Samuel 18 & 19.
What are some characteristics of God that you notice from this chapter?
Think about how God may be using all of this for his bigger picture. How is God orchestrating every part of this?
At the end of 18, we learn that David paid double the amount for his bride than Saul asked for. David risked his life, when he should have died on that mission. But David knew that God was with him.
>> How does this point to Christ? Think of what he did for us. A little hint…it’s a thousand times better than what David did.
Day 2: Read the chapters again. How do these chapters call to confession?
When I was reading this chapter I kept thinking of two words : loyalty and jealousy. It seems to be the theme of these passages. Saul was enraged with jealousy and Jonathan and Michal were loyal to David. And above all David was loyal to God.
This is SUPER cool! Psalm 59 is written by David about this night that David escapes from in chapter 19. Read it. Look at the way David speaks to God. He’s always honest…that’s why he’s my favorite. Also notice that he ends with speaking truth about God. He even says at the end that even though all of these people come against me, “I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love.” BEAUTIFUL!
Take a moral inventory of where you’re at in light of God’s character.
Day 3: Read 1 Samuel 18 & 19 one last time.
>>> How can you live out what you’ve read this week? How does this grow your relationship with God?
Day 4: Prayer
Spend time today praying for someone in your life that you struggle with. This could mean someone you are jealous of, bitter of, mad at, etc. You may not get along with this person but they are still made in the image of God, just like you.
This is going to be hard because of you are like me when you are hurt or bitter with someone the very sound of their name gets you upset. But as you pray, pray for God to soften your heart towards them and then actually pray for them 🙂
